Hold your tongue (Watch what you say)

I will NOT be a hypocrite here. I have far too many faults, flaws and sins to judge anyone else. I am just presenting a short historical background and some verses from the Bible. YOU can make ALL of the judgments yourself.

Blanket Statements

The Ninth Commandment reads:
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (Exodus 20:16)

This is a very important Commandment in our society. I have 3,000 Facebook friends and at any given time I can look at my feed and see several of them Bearing False Witness.

What does that even mean?
It means to spread untrue statements. This is a sin because our name and or honor is all we really own. Spreading lies basically steals a persons honor away from him.

Why are so many doing this?
They are mainly clicking the share button on some poster that goes to extremes to put people with different values in a bad light.

I looked at several of those political posters. Some posters on each side. One of them had 12 statements. 11 turned out to be 100% false and the 12th was very falsified and mostly untrue.

In most of these cases the people didn't attach a face to the post that they liked or shared on Facebook. They just started with a wild dog pack mentality and piled on. When questioned or shown the facts about the post being a lie, they normally get sheepish and feel foolish.

It is easy to be led and pushed into this. Let's take a look at what the Bible says about our tongue.

Matthew 12:36-37 ESV
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV
There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

1 Peter 3:10 ESV
For Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;

Wow we are supposed to speak the truth even about people with different values, different religions and different politics. That means NO exaggerations, No bad jokes, NO lies.

Remember what your mom used to say."If you can't say something nice about someone; then say nothing at all."
